Its ecosystem combines innovation spaces, resident companies, training programmes and projects linked to ocean sustainability.

USC Sea Grant contributes expertise in coastal research, public policy, education and community engagement. Its Urban Ocean programme includes the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach and works to connect scientific knowledge with the needs of coastal communities, industry and public administrations.

Project description

AltaSea and USC Sea Grant have launched a three-year collaboration to strengthen innovation, hands-on training and community engagement in the fields of ports, maritime transport and the blue economy.

The project addresses a key challenge for the ports of the future: the energy and climate transition depends not only on new technologies, but also on the ability to develop specialised talent, activate innovation ecosystems and bring scientific and industrial knowledge closer to waterfront and port communities, where maritime, logistics, urban, environmental and economic activities converge.

The collaboration combines AltaSea’s campus at the Port of Los Angeles, its innovation tenants and workforce development programmes with USC Sea Grant’s leadership in coastal research, public policy and community engagement. The aim is to create a long-term framework that connects science, industry and coastal communities to accelerate solutions related to climate resilience, port sustainability and blue economy development.

The project’s innovative value lies in placing talent development, education and knowledge transfer at the centre of port transformation. The initiative goes beyond research by training skilled professionals through practical programmes, educational resources and outreach activities. This approach is particularly relevant in areas such as alternative fuels, carbon capture for maritime transport, sustainable port operations, climate adaptation and emerging technologies.

The project will also be integrated into AltaSea’s Deep Blue Decade initiative, which seeks to connect ports, companies, innovation communities and public stakeholders to identify shared challenges and scale solutions developed in Southern California. Through this effort, Los Angeles and California aim to strengthen their position as leaders in building a more resilient, competitive and sustainable coastal economy.

Project objectives

The main objectives are to promote applied research and innovation in the blue economy, develop practical training programmes for future maritime and port professionals, and create educational and community tools that connect science, industry and society.

The initiative also aims to help ports adapt to technological, regulatory and environmental changes, strengthening their capacity to respond to the energy transition, climate change and evolving coastal community needs.

Publication date

4 June 2026.

Useful links

AltaSea news article on the collaboration with USC Sea Grant

USC Sea Grant information about AltaSea and its relationship with the Port of Los Angeles

NOAA Sea Grant announcement on the partnership between AltaSea and USC Sea Grant

Project leaders The open innovation project is led by AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles and USC Sea Grant, a programme of the University of Southern California that is part of the national Sea Grant network administered by NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration).
