The project emerges at a time when decarbonization continues to be one of the major challenges in the maritime sector.

The planned cruise ship will be 275 meters long, have a capacity for 1,856 passengers, and an approximate tonnage of 82,000 GT. The shipyard states that a significant portion of typical European routes could be covered with this electric system, especially as recharging infrastructure is deployed in European ports. It estimates that by 2030 around a hundred European ports could have the necessary infrastructure. In Scandinavia, for example, ferries and other small vessels that are 100% electric are already operational, but electrification of large cruise ships is still a path with much to go.

The innovative aspect of the project is not only the replacement of fuel with electric energy but also the redefinition of the ship’s design. By eliminating conventional main engines and part of the systems associated with gas treatment, the concept introduces architectural changes that affect the layout of onboard spaces, the passenger experience, and potentially the ship’s acoustic and vibrational impact. This makes the project an example of innovation where the energy transition also transforms naval design.

Although it is still a conceptual design, this case exemplifies an alternative route for decarbonizing the cruise sector based on full electrification, especially relevant in the European context, where the development of port charging infrastructure could become a key factor in making this new generation of vessels viable.

Project Objectives

The objective of the project is to demonstrate the technical and operational feasibility of a fully electric cruise ship for European routes, exploring how the combination of large battery systems, new naval architecture, and electric port charging infrastructure can contribute to significantly reducing passenger maritime transport emissions.

Publication Date

June 12, 2026

Links

Blue Economy News on MEYER WERFT’s Project Vision launch

Crucero Adicto

El Confidencial

Project Leaders The project is driven by MEYER WERFT Group, a German shipyard responsible for the conceptual design of the vessel, in collaboration with Corvus Energy, a Norwegian company responsible for the battery system.
