PasteCool®: Passive cooling for heat-resilient port infrastructures

Project leaders
The project is led by Entropy Lab, a spin-off from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore specialized in advanced passive cooling technologies and sustainable thermal management.

Project description
PasteCool® is a passive cooling solution based on a nano-engineered paint designed to reduce heat accumulation on surfaces exposed to sunlight. The technology works by reflecting a significant portion of solar radiation and facilitating the release of accumulated heat, allowing the surface temperature of buildings and infrastructures to decrease without the need for electricity consumption or active cooling systems.

This approach offers an innovative alternative to conventional air conditioning, particularly relevant in industrial and logistics environments with large exposed surfaces. In the port context, PasteCool® can be applied to warehouse roofs, terminals, operational buildings, pavements, or metal structures, helping to reduce the thermal load of spaces and indirectly lower the energy consumption associated with indoor cooling.

The solution is designed to strengthen infrastructure resilience to rising extreme temperatures, improving workers’ thermal comfort and helping mitigate the urban heat island effect, an increasing challenge for ports located in areas or regions with high solar exposure. In this sense, PasteCool® aligns with the sustainability, energy efficiency and climate adaptation goals that many ports around the world are pursuing.

Entropy Lab’s participation in the Smart Port Challenge programme of PIER71, the innovation ecosystem of the Port of Singapore, enables the technology to be tested in specific use cases defined by the maritime and port sector. Through this ecosystem, the solution has been deployed and validated in real environments, connecting with port operators, terminals and logistics companies, and paving the way for pilot projects and potential commercial implementations, particularly in Asian ports and other markets with warm climates.

Project objectives
The objective of the project is to demonstrate how a passive cooling paint developed with advanced materials can help make port infrastructures more energy efficient, more resilient to global warming, and better adapted to extreme climate conditions, without requiring complex operational changes or increased energy consumption.
