The project is being promoted by Shandong Port Group, operator of the Port of Qingdao, in collaboration with Hydrogen Technology Co. Ltd., the company responsible for developing the solid-state hydrogen-based UPS system. According to the available sources, the initiative has been deployed at the Port of Qingdao itself as the first commercial case in China of an online UPS system of this kind applied in a port environment.
This case presents the implementation of a 5 kW uninterrupted power supply (UPS) system based on solid-state hydrogen at the Port of Qingdao. The solution stands out because it represents the first deployment in China of an online UPS system with solid-state hydrogen storage, and it is already in an initial operational implementation phase following its commissioning at the end of March 2026.
The technology uses nanocomposite materials that make it possible to store hydrogen under normal temperature and pressure conditions, which helps improve safety compared to other storage models and facilitates its integration into sensitive industrial environments such as ports. The innovative component of the project lies in combining solid-state hydrogen technology with a backup power application for critical systems, offering a potentially safer and more sustainable alternative to conventional backup power systems.
In this sense, the solution is designed to ensure an immediate response in the event of power supply interruptions, strengthening operational continuity in port infrastructures where energy reliability is a key factor.
This case illustrates how hydrogen can also begin to be explored in less common formats within the port sector, not only as a fuel for mobility or machinery, but also as a support solution for energy resilience and service continuity in logistics and industrial environments.
The objective of the project is to demonstrate the viability of a solid-state hydrogen-based UPS system to ensure continuous power supply in port environments, exploring a safer solution with decarbonization potential for critical applications within port infrastructure.
