Wine project consisting on submerging amphoras in Port of Tarragona’s waters as a method for aging local wines

Project description

On April 23, 2021, 100 amphoras of wine were submerged in Port of Tarragona’s waters, specifically in the subaquatic park of the Societat d’Exploracions Submarines (SES). This wine project aims to use Port of Tarragona’s waters as a mean of aging wines produced by local wineries.

The submerged amphoras will carry wines from recognised wine-growing areas of the territory, such as Priorat and Terra Alta, which will remain in the subaquatic park for twelve months while waiting for the sea currents to take effect. This same project will also be used to place oils and vermouths also elaborated in the territory.

The area chosen to place the amphoras is located inside the subaquatic park managed by the Societat d’Exploracions Submarines (SES).

Project objectives

To analyze how the submerged wines ages in the sea and how it evolves within this natural environment. According to the representative of the company S’Àmfora “the wine in marine amphorae ages faster than on land and provides it with very different organoleptic conditions thanks to the immersion process that totally preserves it from the light and promotes its recirculation with a constant movement under the sea”.

Expected benefits of the project

That within twelve months the sea currents take an effect on the organoleptic conditions of the wine, and that the same procedure can also be extended to oils and vermouths produced in the territory.
